Fragment of L[aoidh] Muilleartaich [Laoidh Muileartach] beginning 'Bha e mar illibhinn aillibhinn chreag, Mar streadharnan ainibheasach thugain'. The song is composed of two verses of four lines each and was written first in pencil and then written over in ink.

Scope and Contents Song entitled 'Duan an Deirg' collected from Alasdair Donullach [Alexander MacDonald], crofter, Boradh, Barra [Borgh/Borve, Barraigh/Isle of Barra], composed of thirty-six stanzas of four lines each. The first verse begins 'Ailis dhuinn Oisein dhanaich, Mhic Fhinn shuaicne o righ ghradhiach'. An accompanying note states '948 since this came to Barra by the Lees na Liasaich'. A pencil calculation above indicates that '948' refers to the 948 AD. Written transversely on folio 24r is...

Song entitled 'Gorag' beginning 'Gorag nach deach thu dh Iain dubh' originally collected from John Cameron, crofter, Borve, Barra [Borgh, Barraigh] on 7 October 1868 at a bruth-sìth [fairy knoll] at Bruth-arnis [Bruairnis/Bruernish] in Barra where Creag Goraig is situated. Carmichael remarks that 'Cameron is full of old lore and is a good intelligent story-teller'.

The inside front cover is inscribed in ink with 'Bought at Wadebridge Cornwall Dec[ember] 1 1864 p 1/6 A A Carmichael' and the opposite page has 'A A Carmichael' written on it in pencil. The notebook contains Fenian songs or tales mainly collected in Uibhist a Deas/South Uist and Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula, some of which are repeated in full or in part.
